This Homemade Sledgehammer Log Splitter consists of a wedge welded to a steel bracket that's free to slide up/down over a length of 2-inch-square steel tubing, which is anchored deep in the ground and also attached to the top rail of a chain link fence for stability. A flat stump serves as a solid base on which is placed an 18-inch-long log. A couple of blows to the top of the wedge with a sledgehammer is reportedly all it takes to split the log. The cap on the square tubing can be taken off, which allows the wedge to be removed for sharpening.
