GRIT Freedom Chair
Instead of pushing on the wheels for locomotion, the GRIT Freedom Chair user pushes on individually geared levers, which are designed to be more efficient and ease strain on the muscles. Grabbing low on the levers ('high gear') reportedly enables the user to travel 80% faster than a standard wheelchair on a sidewalk, maintained ground, etc.; grabbing high on the levers ('low gear') reportedly enables one to power over obstacles (e.g., mud, sand, rocks), rough terrain, etc. with 50% more torque than a regular chair. To travel straight, users operate the levers simultaneously; to turn or maneuver, users operate them independently. Pulling backwards on the levers applies the brakes for stopping and turning. Other features of the GRIT chair: uses standard bicycle parts (for easy replacement/repair), solid-rubber front wheel (for stability), collapsible design (for storing in a car trunk), quick-release wheels and footrest, and cushioned seat (for comfort). Accommodates riders up to 220 pounds.
